Does your kitchen feel less than impressive these days? Maybe it’s been awhile since you redecorated, or perhaps you’ve never loved your kitchen. Whatever the case may be, if you’ve got a case of the “blahs,” it’s time to inject your kitchen with some personality and flair.
Renovating or redoing a kitchen is pricey, but there are ways to add personality to your cook space without spending the big bucks. If you’re looking to spice up your kitchen, consider how accessorizing with a few well-thought-out pieces can take you to a new level.
By carefully choosing some interesting accessories, hardware, art, plants, rugs, and more, you can boost your kitchen’s style, making it a room you’re excited to be in and entertain in. After all, don’t family and friends always seem to congregate in the kitchen?
Read on for some tips on how to add personality to your kitchen.
1. Hang art
You may think of your living room as having the prime wall space to hang art you love. But don’t overlook the impact art can have in a kitchen.
If your kitchen needs a splash of color, a large work of art in a bold hue can do the trick. Remember though, the art should coordinate with or complement the color scheme your kitchen is already sporting.
While art featuring food, dining, or other kitchen-related scenes works well in a kitchen, don’t be afraid to think outside the food and drink box. Just make sure to pick a piece of art that suits your personality, and that you won’t get sick of in a week or few.
2. Install statement lighting
Add character to your kitchen with pendant lights that hang over your island, peninsula, or even your kitchen table. You can choose from a variety of styles, from industrial and modern to vintage and romantic.
Not only do pendant lights offer a touch of fun, they offer a good way to add some color to your space. Look for unique pendants, not the run-of-the-mill choices everyone has.
3. Deck out your cabinets
It’s amazing what a difference new cabinet pulls or knobs can make in your kitchen. If you’ve had the same knobs for years, consider trying a new style, finish, or material to add new interest to your kitchen.
If you like the look of metal, consider brass, copper, or nickel finishes. Glass, leather, stone, and other materials are also unique choices that can make your cabinets stand out.
Scour flea markets or antique shops for vintage knobs, if that’s your style, or see what local craftsmen or artists are coming up with. Your choice of unique knobs could just become a conversation starter at your next dinner party.
4. Put down a rug
Rugs and kitchens don’t always seem to go hand-in-hand, but adding a carpet to your kitchen is a great way to add a splash of style. Rugs, with non-skid pads underneath, are also functional, helping prevent slips and falls.
You likely already have a rug in front of your kitchen sink. Consider swapping out your standard-size sink rug for something a little grander. A runner that stretches the length of your cabinets, or even a larger rectangular or circular rug can make a statement.
Rugs are also a great way to soften up your kitchen, adding a nice bit of texture and color to juxtapose the hard surfaces of your cabinets, stainless steel appliances, granite, and tile.
When buying a rug for the kitchen, get one that is washable so you won’t be worried about the inevitable spills. And invest in a quality rug that can handle high traffic, and won’t fall apart after a few washes.
5. Change up your dishtowels
Possibly the quickest and cheapest way to add an influx of personality to your kitchen is to swap out your dishtowels. It’s amazing what a new dishtowel’s color, texture, or pattern can do to spruce up your kitchen.
What season is it? Choose your new dishtowels accordingly, and plan to swap out towels a few times per year to add new life to your kitchen and reflect the seasons.
Looking for some fun towel ideas? Try tie-dyed tea towels, or go for some interesting batiks. Or choose a fun, trendy pattern that catches your eye.
The key is to think about the colors in your kitchen when choosing new towels. Pick towels that pick up on your existing colors. Or, choose towels in an entirely new color, albeit one that works with your existing scheme.
6. Display a cool, functional piece
Give your kitchen some personality by displaying a unique, but functional piece. Maybe it’s a really pretty blown-glass bowl made by a local artisan. Or perhaps it’s a colorful teakettle that adds some pizazz to your stovetop.
Whatever you choose, make sure it serves a purpose in your kitchen. You don’t want your cooking, eating, and hanging out space to become cluttered by objects that look great but don’t have a function in the kitchen.
7. Add some greenery
There’s no better way to add some life to your kitchen then bringing nature indoors with some greenery. Line your windowsill with a few cute flowerpots growing fresh herbs. Or, buy some flowers and place them in an eye-catching vase to brighten up your counter.
Also consider hanging plants from the ceiling, or placing a large floor plant in a corner or strategic place. Just don’t let your greenery choices overwhelm the kitchen, or stand too close to your burners.
