    5 Unique Bedroom Décor Ideas

Our lives are so busy these days that our bedrooms are frequently our last refuge away from social, professional, and familial obligations. While simply achieving sanctuary each night is often enough to refuel us for another day, a truly beautiful bedroom promotes real relaxation and can serve as an escape around the clock.

From quick makeovers to full remodels, there are plenty of ways to turn a boring bedroom into a space that re-energizes you and helps you feel more centered. Obviously your own tastes should be the most important consideration as you revamp any space but because your bedrooms are the most private areas of your home, they're also the perfect place to explore bedroom décor ideas that are a little different.

Here are five pieces of redesign and decoration inspiration chosen to help you think differently about your bedroom décor.

    1. Make your ceiling pop

    1-bedroom.jpg

Plain white ceilings have their place but if you've grown tired of looking at the same old expanses of white think about your other options. The popularity of painted ceilings ebbs and flows, and there's no real consensus about whether (depending on the color) they add height or shorten a room.

Another option is the cedar clad ceiling. Unusual, yes, but such a delight on a top floor bedroom with plenty of natural light and a ceiling on the taller side. It's a way of bringing nature in without going country, and when paired with light colored walls, can add warmth and coziness to an otherwise cold bedroom.

    2. Think huge when thinking headboard

    2-headboard.jpg

Nowadays it's common to scale a headboard to the bed but look back at historical design and you'll see headboards were frequently scaled to the room they were in. Even if space is at a premium in your bedroom or a guest bedroom, consider having a custom recessed headboard built.

Because it's recessed an oversized headboard can actually add to available floor space, and if it's built in you can enhance it with all kinds of anti-clutter options like shelving for books. Who needs side tables when you have plenty of bedside shelves in arm's reach?

    3. Add height with stripes

A striped accent wall isn't as fresh as it once was but the concept is still sound. An accent wall at once adds interest and makes rooms feel larger and more dynamic. You can take your bedroom from drab to fab without changing much with a few colors of paint and a steady hand. You begin with a striped accent wall and then expand your stripes from wall to ceiling for a visually arresting, energetic effect.

    4. Scale down to scale luxury up

    4-scale-down.jpg

Right now the upscale aesthetic is all about scaling down. Think mid-century modern proportions, less clutter, lots of white and wood and metallic accents. It's not all about the furnishing and color scheme, however. Look at the most compelling modern luxury homes and you'll see the one thing they all have in common is plenty of empty space

The first step is simply decluttering. If your bedroom has become a catch all that gets less frequent attention because guests never see it, change your thinking. Aim to make your bedroom a space that draws you in. Once you've divested yourself of whatever isn't beautiful or useful, only then is it time to think about redecorating.

    5. Let the light in with bigger windows

    5-windows.jpg

Even a dark bedroom can serve as an evening sanctuary but what if you could make your bedroom feel more like a spa? Large windows and airy French doors can make your bedroom into a space you want to be in all the time. For maximum impact, leave your new windows undressed.

It's not as shocking an idea as it sound because undressed windows don't have to mean giving your neighbors an intimate look into your life. These days there are privacy films you can have professionally installed. They are simple one-way filters that give you an unobstructed view of the outdoors while curious passersby only see a dark tint.

Ultimately however you update your bedroom, your choices should be comfortable, beautiful, and above all restful. What does peace mean to you? If dark colors, hard angles, and exciting themes give you comfort then by all means feel free to go against the prevailing bedroom decoration ideas that suggest décor should be all warmth and softness. Only you know what your personal sanctuary should look like – and once you've envisioned it, you can make it happen.
